Future sport champions set to shine at School Sport Australia Games

30 Apr 2024

The Gold Coast is gearing up to host Australia’s best young sporting talent at the inaugural School Sport Australia Games from 27 July to 3 August 2024.

With over 1750 students representing their respective states or territories in swimming, basketball, hockey, softball, netball, and AFL, the event promises to be a chance to see future international champions make their mark.

This is the first time a School Sport Australia event will be held in a multi-sport format, amplifying the thrill and competitiveness for participants and spectators alike. School Sports Australia will deliver the Games in partnership with expert multi-sport event coordinator in UniSport.

The Queensland Government is contributing $50,000 to support the delivery of the Games, underlining its commitment to enhancing the sport participation and sport talent pathways and aligning with the ten-year Activate! Queensland strategy, which aims to get more Queenslanders moving, more often.

The Games will unfold across various venues throughout the Gold Coast, offering athletes an immersive experience in elite competition. Beyond the sporting arena, students and parents can look forward to vibrant opening and closing ceremonies, while teachers will engage in dedicated professional development opportunities as part of the enhanced program.

School Sport Australia Executive Officer Phil Reeves said the Games are a milestone in representative school sports, emphasising the benefits the event will deliver.

“This multi-sport event will be staged at the same time as the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and no doubt will be a forerunner to what some of the students participating will experience in eight years’ time at Brisbane 2032”, Mr Reeves said.

"The School Sport Australia Games will give all students an unforgettable sporting and educational experience and would not be possible without the major support of the Queensland State Government and other support from our event partners like Gold Coast City Council, UniSport and Struddys.”

The Games are expected to stimulate the Gold Coast economy with visitor spending projected to hit approximately $4.2 million.
