$24 million additional support for tourism recovery for Far North Queensland

A $24.25 million funding package, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, aims to aid struggling Far North Queensland tourism businesses affected by Tropical Cyclone Jasper through grants, infrastructure support, and promotional efforts, offering hope for recovery and resilience in the region's tourism industry.

A new $24.25 million funding package will help struggling Far North Queensland tourism businesses stay afloat while attracting more visitors to the region after Tropical Cyclone Jasper left many operators still unable to open their doors.

The Tourism Recovery and Resilience Program is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

It includes a $10 million grant program for exceptional impacts to support the tourism industry in Tropical North Queensland. The grant program focuses on supporting businesses that have been isolated or unable to trade due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Jasper flooding.

A further $10 million in Building Resilient Tourism Infrastructure grants will be available to tourism operators who were severely impacted to rebuild stronger with flood-resilient infrastructure such as solar panels other mitigation infrastructure.

Another $3 million will go towards promoting the region, to encourage travellers back to the Far North.

The Queensland Reconstruction Authority will utilise the remaining funding to administer the overall package to be delivered by the Department of Tourism and Sport to council areas including Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Cook, Douglas, Hope Vale, Mareeba, Tablelands, Wujal Wujal and Yarrabah.

It’s in addition to a $5 million tourism recovery package that is also being jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, featuring discounted airfares and accommodation and disaster recovery assistance grants.

Discounted accommodation packages will also be available in coming weeks through Qantas Hotels & Holidays, My Queensland and Luxury Escapes.
